SWANAGE BOWLING CLUB

Extraordinary General Meeting

Saturday 5th January, 10am. Beach Gardens

RESOLUTION

Swanage Bowling Club Management Committee, recommend we rescind the

vote to replace the green with an all-weather surface, taken some 3 years ago, as we do not think it will happen.

We would strongly, therefore, recommend that we replace the poor surface with a level and better grass surface, at a much lower cost.

This after securing a lease on the green and surrounds from the Town Council at a peppercorn rent.

Only full members are entitled to vote on this bowling matter in accordance with a motion agreed at the last AGM

Dorset 4 wood singles success

Congratulations to Gordon who this evening beat Ben Paulley of Blandford in a dramatic match to win through to the Dorset 4 wood singles quarter finals.

Gordon was trailing 12 – 0 to an impressive Ben Paulley but once he won an end and went with a longer jack the gap was steadily closed.

Gordon was 20 – 19 up with Ben holding 3 shots but Gordon calmly trailed the jack back to his waiting woods and took the game 24  – 19.

Gordon now travels to Greenhill on 15th July for the Quarter and Semi finals. Good Luck.

B & D Premier League Section 3.

The Great Escape Mk.2

As last year, we had a great escape from relegation, it went down to the wire and the last game of the season.

It was a fight between Branksome Park ‘A’ and ourselves over the second half of the season.

In the last 4 games we beat Branksome Park, lost to Poole Park ‘B’, beat Milford on Sea, and lost to Kings Park. During this run we accrued 26 points, finally beating Branksome in the league by 6 points PHEW! So we stay in Section 3.

Percy Baker Trophy League.

A Good Season.

We won 8 and lost 2 games this season, taking 47 points from a possible 60, winning East 2 division. Thus qualifying for the area finals.

We beat Broadstone in the semis but lost to Poole Park in the area final.

So well done the Swans on all accounts and thanks to all the members that took part.

Bowls Dorset Season Report

It was a tough season for the men of Swanage Bowls Club in Bowls Dorset Division 1 East.

We lost our first ten games but in all those games managed to pick up at least one point from rink wins and draws and ultimately these points kept us safe from relegation.

Our 1st win didn’t arrive until mid July when we took on fellow strugglers Wimborne A at home. We won that one 8-2 and followed up with our best result of the season at Gillingham (won 8-2). It did not bode well when two of our cars decided to try and avoid the Camp Bestival traffic around Wareham by going via the ferry only to hit long delays there! They eventually arrived slightly late but went on the green and nearly secured a 10-0 win only losing one rink in the last throws.

We finished 2nd from bottom to avoid relegation but we managed to score at least one point in all our games!

Next season we will still have games against Wimborne because their 1st team were relegated from the Premier Division. We will also have to travel to Ferndown who were promoted from division 2.

Here is a the final table.

Top Club Success

This year Swanage men entered a team in the Top Club National Knock Out Competition.

This competition consists of five disciplines, 2 wood singles, 4 wood singles, pairs, triples and rinks.

The first few rounds are against other Dorset sides and then becomes more regional with games in Wiltshire etc.

In the 1st Round Swanage were drawn at home against a very strong Blandford side.

All five disciplines were played at the same time with the two singles matches finishing first with Gordon securing a comfortable win in the 4 woods. Our 2 wood club champion, John, came up against a very strong player and unfortunately lost.

The next match to finish was the triples which was a very tight game from start to finish. In the end Brian’s consistent leading backed up by Barrie and myself got over the line to win by two shots and make it 2-1 to Swanage.

Meanwhile our rink of Ken, Paul, David F and skipper Graham failed to peg back a strong Blandford team so 2-2.

Our heroic pair of Mike K and Hoggy finished the job off with a nice win after a little scare when Blandford cut the lead to one shot.

So on to round two where we travel to Poole Park to play our old ‘friends’.

Lets hope this result will prove to be the turning point in our season.
