This week began with the men travelling to Poole Park for the Bowls Dorset Men’s League game. It was a miserable and wet evening and the captains agreed that it be a 15 end game, this being the minimum ends to constitute a completed game. Swanage won the game 38-33 shots and 2 rinks to 1 so 8 points gained. Roger Senior, Dave Hogsflesh, Clive Bryceson and skip Terry Buck were the top rink with a 9 shot win 19-10.
On Tuesday the Percy Baker E2 game was played at Wimborne this was only a 3 shot loss 28-31, Terry Buck was ably aided by Mike Keats and Steve Newland to a 12 shot rink win 20-8.
On Wednesday the Ladies hosted Blandford ‘Otters’ in the Edna Paisley League, unfortunately we lost this one 25 shots to 38, our rink of Pam Ruddick, Connie Palmer and skip Jenny Carter, however won handsomely 21-5 giving us 2 points in the league.
Thursday the game was at home against Broadstone Wessex in the Percy Baker League E4, this was an overall win by 15 shots 42-27, one rink each, the rink of John Brudenell, Barrie Tatman and skip Gordon Wallis won handsomely 29 shots to 11. Also the Ladies travelled to Braeside, who have an artificial surface, to play their Bournemouth & District Ladies League game. This was a very tight game but we came out winners on both rinks, with an overall score of 37-35 a 2 shot win. Jan Cherry, Linda Wallis and skip Uta Keats, were 19 all after 17 ends and took a 1 shot win with the last wood of the game 20-19. Sue King, Gill Bryceson and skip Judy Smooker held off their rivals to also take a one shot win 17-16. Maximum league points here.
On Saturday in the Bournemouth & District Mixed Triples League we entertained Ferndown at Swanage. This was an overall loss of 35 shots to 39, the rink of Lil Bell, Paul Knapman and skip Judy Smooker were one shot down after 16 ends but took 4 shots on the 17 and kept the opponents to 1 shot on the last to win 19-17.
Both the Ladies and the Men were involved in County, club knockout matches this week, the Ladies went to Branksome Park to play in the ‘June Culpin Trophy’ and won well on both rinks, Jan Cherry, Julie Lomas-Smith, Linda Wallis and skip Uta Keats won 26-18 and Sue King, Nadine Evans, Gill Bryceson and skip Judy Smooker won 25-16. So through to the next round, they will again be away to either Greenhill BC or Poole Park BC. This to be played before 16th August.
The men played in the ‘County Cup’, this is a 4 rink match, 2 played at home and 2 played away, against Blandford BC. The two rinks playing away at Blandford both won, Roger Senior, John Brudenell, Dave Hogsflesh and skip Terry buck won 19-15 and Mike Keats, Barrie Tatman, Jim Kelly and their skip Gordon Wallis won 23-18, however we lost overall by 68-72 shots, so better luck next year!
